Abstract:If you deleted photos from an iPhone that you now want back, there are several recovery methods. Here's how to recover deleted photos from an iPhone.
You can recover deleted photos from an iPhone in a number of ways. The Photos app has a Recently Deleted folder that keeps discarded photos for up to 30 days.If more than 30 days have elapsed, you can restore your entire phone to an older backup using either iCloud or iTunes. If you have Dropbox or OneDrive installed on your phone, you can restore photos from the automatic photo backup either of those apps are capable of performing.Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. For many people, photos are the single most important content on their iPhone. So losing your photos can be something of a catastrophe. The good news is that even if you accidentally delete some (or all) of your photos, there are a few ways to get them back. We'll discuss those methods, and also explain a few safeguards you can take to keep your photos ultra-secure. Check the Recently Deleted folderSome people might not realize that Apple provides a “recently deleted” photo folder in the Photos app — think of it like the Recycle Bin on your computer desktop. It holds all the photos that have been deleted for 30 days. On day 31, a deleted photo is deleted permanently — but until then it's easy to recover.1. Open the Photos app.2. Scroll down the list of Other Albums and tap “Recently Deleted.”3. Tap “Select” at the top right of the screen.4. Select every photo that you want to return to your iPhone.5. In the lower right corner, tap “Recover All.”If you only need to recover a single photo, you can also tap that photo and tap “Recover.”Recover photos from an iCloud backupIf the photos are already gone from the Recently Deleted folder, then you may be able to get your photos back by restoring your phone to a backup. The disadvantage of this approach is that you will need to replace all the other content on your phone — apps, data, text messages, and so on — with an older backup, which you might not want to do. If the backup you want to restore is fairly recent though, it might be worth it. If you use iCloud to back up your phone, follow these steps. If you use iTunes, skip down to the next section. 1. Backup your phone so that if something goes awry, or you don't like the content of the older backup and are willing to give up the photos, you can return to your current configuration. Follow the instructions in our article “How to backup an iPhone to iCloud, your computer, or an external hard drive.”2. After the backup is complete, perform a factory reset, and then restore the phone to a backup that's old enough to include the photos you have lost. Our article “How to restore your iPhone from a backup after taking the 'nuclear option' of a factory reset” has all the details to complete these steps. 3. When the restore is complete, check the Photos app to see if you recovered the photos you lost. If not, you can repeat the process and restore an older backup, or return to the most recent backup. If the older backup has the photos you're looking for, but you don't like the rest of the older version, you can try emailing the photos to yourself or uploading them onto an external cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.), and then returning your phone to its later version.Recover photos from an iTunes backupMost people now use iCloud to backup and restore their phone, but if you're still using iTunes for this, then restoring from a backup is pretty straightforward. 1. Start iTunes on your computer.2. Connect your iPhone to the computer and then click the iPhone icon when it appears in the upper left corner of the iTunes window. 3. Click the “Summary tab” in the pane on the left.4. In the Backups section, click “Restore Backup.”5. Choose the backup you want to restore to your phone. 6. When the restore is complete, check the Photos app to see if you recovered the photos you lost. If not, you can repeat the process and restore an older backup, or return to the most recent backup.Check your cloud storage serviceFinally, if you use a cloud service like Dropbox or OneDrive, you have an ace in the hole. These services let you automatically create a separate backup of all your photos, independent of iCloud and iTunes, which are then synchronized with a folder on your computer. If you don't already use one of these, you should. You can install the Dropbox or OneDrive app for your iPhone, and easily configure both of these apps to back up your photos. They're automatically backed up to the cloud (and to your desktop computer) in the background, with no effort required from you. If you have a cloud backup of your photos thanks to a service like Dropbox or OneDrive, you can easily restore them to your phone.1. Open the folder on your computer that includes the backed up photos from your iPhone.2. Also open your iCloud Photos collection in a web browser.3. Drag the photos that you want to restore from the folder to the browser. They'll automatically be uploaded to iCloud, and soon thereafter synced with your iPhone.Related coverage from How To Do Everything: Tech:How to backup your iPhone to iCloud or a computerHow to sync your iPhone and iPad with your email, photos, text messages, and moreAll the ways you can transfer photos from one iPhone to another, without using a computerHow you can easily delete all the photos on your iPhone at once
