Abstract:Apple is taking on Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and the cable companies with its new TV streaming service.
Apple finally unveiled its long-rumored TV streaming service at an event on Monday.The service is Apple's latest venture into the television business.Apple announced the new service at its Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California on Monday morning.Apple finally unveiled its long-rumored TV service on Tuesday during an event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. The service is an evolution of the Apple TV app, and it collects a variety of streaming and cable-based television into the already existing Apple TV app.Additionally, Apple unveiled Apple TV+ — its own push into original TV production.Apple outlined a few of its main goals with the new TV portal:The idea is that Apple TV will act as a portal to all your entertainment — whether it's cable subscription-based or on Hulu, or a variety of other services.Moreover, those services will span across all your Apple devices: iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Anything that runs the Apple TV app — the app for Apple TV arrives on Mac “this fall.”The update to Apple TV, however, is coming sooner: This May, according to Apple.Additionally, the Apple TV app is coming to a variety of competitor's devices — from Amazon's Fire TV platform to Roku and Samsung smart TVs.Apple TV+More than just a new portal, Apple also unveiled its push into original content creation named Apple TV+. It did as much with the creatives behind each new production.Director Steven Spielberg appeared on stage to announce a re-boot of his classic TV series “Amazing Stories”; Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Aniston, and Steve Carell appeared on stage to announce a new sitcom named “The Morning Show”; Alfre Woodard and Jason Momoa appeared on stage to announce a new travel show; and Kumail Nanjiani appeared on stage to announce a docuseries about immigrants living in the US called “Little America.” A new show from the folks behind “Sesame Street” was also unveiled, named “Helpsters,” which is focused on teaching coding to kids. Big Bird himself showed up to announce the new show, alongside “Codey,” the host of the “Helpsters.”And that wasn't all: “Star Wars” director J.J. Abrams appeared alongside singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles to announce a new show named “Little Voice.”No trailers were shown for any of the shows, but a sizzle reel with clips of each was run.Additionally, a variety of other creatives were announced as working on shows for Apple TV+, from Bill Murray to Aaron Paul.
