Im Kampf gegen die Inflation hat die US-Notenbank erneut den Leitzins erhöht.
Die Fed erhöhte den Zins kräftig um 0,75 Prozentpunkte auf eine Spanne von 3,75 bis 4,00 Prozent. Es war bereits der vierte Zinsschritt seit Beginn der Zinswende im Frühjahr.
Die Entscheidung der US-Notenbank setzt auch die Europäische Zentralbank unter Druck, die Zinsen für die Euro-Zone bei ihrer nächsten Sitzung im Dezember erneut anzuheben.
Im Kampf gegen die anhaltend hohe Inflation hat die US-Notenbank Federal Reserve den Leitzins in den USA erneut kräftig angehoben. Die Fed um ihren Präsidenten Jerome Powell erhöhte den Zins um 0,75 Prozentpunkte auf eine Spanne von nunmehr 3,75 bis 4,00 Prozent. Es war bereits die vierte Zinserhöhung seit Beginn der Zinswende der Fed im März.
An den Finanzmärkten war eine Zinserhöhung in dieser Größe erwartet worden.
Die Inflation in den USA hält sich trotz der bisherigen Zinserhöhungen hartnäckig oberhalb von acht Prozent. Im September war sie nur geringfügig auf 8,2 Prozent gefallen. Die wichtige Kernrate der Inflation ohne die stark schwankenden Preise für Energie und Nahrungsmittel stieg sogar von 6,3 auf 6,6 Prozent. Daten für Oktober liegen in den USA noch nicht vor.
In Deutschland betrug die Inflationsrate nach nationaler Rechnung im Oktober 10,4 Prozent. Nach Rechnung der Europäischen Zentralbank (EZB) beträgt die Teuerung in der Euro-Zone 10,7 Prozent und in Deutschland 11,7 Prozent. Die EZB strebt wie auch die Fed eine Kernrate der Inflation von zwei Prozent an.

Mit ihrem neuen Zinsschritt setzt die Fed andere Notenbanken unter Druck, ihre Zinsen ebenfalls zu erhöhen, um die Differenz zu den USA nicht zu groß werden zu lassen. Schon jetzt sind Anlagen in den USA attraktiver als zum Beispiel in Europa. Das hat dazu geführt, dass der US-Dollar zum Euro und vielen anderen Währungen an Stärke gewonnen hat. Dies macht wiederum Importe für viele Länder teurer, die oft in Dollar abgerechnet werden. Dies gilt vor allem für Energie.
Druck auf Europäische Zentralbank, erneut die Zinsen zu erhöhen
Die Bank of England entscheidet bereits am Donnerstag über die Leitzinsen. Die Europäische Zentralbank hat erst vor einer Woche die Zinsen erhöht. Die nächste Zinsentscheidung der EZB steht erst im Dezember an. Volkswirte und Anleger erwarten, dass die EZB die Zinsen dann ebenfalls noch einmal erhöht. Auch die US-Fed berät in diesem Jahr noch einmal im Dezember über weitere Zinsschritte.
Die Zentralbanken stehen in vielen Ländern vor einer besonderen Herausforderung: Sie haben es mit einer hohen Inflation bei gleichzeitiger Rezessionsgefahr zu tun. Zinserhöhungen gelten als bewährtes Mittel gegen hohe Inflationsraten. Sie haben allerdings zwei Nachteile: Zum einen drosseln sie die Konjunktur, weil sie Kredite und damit Investitionen teurer machen. Zum anderen wirken sie oft erst mit einigen Monaten Verzögerung. In den USA haben sich zuletzt die Stimmen vermehrt, die ein Ende der Zinserhöhungen oder zumindest ein reduziertes Tempo der Zinsschritte fordern. Powell könnte zumindest zeitnahe Signale für eine weniger harte Zinspolitik geben. Die einflussreiche „Washington Post“ schrieb dagegen: „Die oberste Aufgabe der Fed sollte es sein, die steigenden Preise zu bremsen. Solange es keine zwingenden Beweise für eine Trendwende gibt, sollte die Fed hart bleiben.”
