Abstract:In the last 24 hours, clients of Swissquote, a company that lets people trade online, have had trouble getting to its platforms. The company recently said that it had been hit by a big DDoS attack both yesterday and today.
Swissquote said its systems are back up and running, although there may be some delays in specific services while the system returns to normal.
“Yesterday and partially today, Swissquote was subjected to a major DDoS assault,” Swissquote said on social media.
Customers had trouble using our platforms and services because of the attack and how our IT systems and Internet providers responded.
The systems are back up and running, although there may be some delays in particular services until the system returns to normal.
We sincerely apologize for any difficulty caused by this disturbance.
We appreciate your commitment and support.
What is a DDoS attack?
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to stop regular traffic to a specific server, service, or network by flooding the target or its surrounding infrastructure with Internet traffic.
DDoS assaults operate because they leverage numerous compromised machines as attack traffic sources. Computers and other networked resources, such as IoT devices, may be exploited.
A DDoS attack is like an unplanned traffic jam that makes it hard for regular traffic to get where it needs to go.
How does a DDoS attack work?
DDoS assaults are done by using networks of computers linked to the Internet.
These networks are made up of computers and other devices (like Internet of Things devices) that have been infected with malware and can be controlled remotely by an attacker. Individual devices are known as “bots” (or “zombies”), while a network of bots is known as a “botnet.”
Once a botnet is set up, an attacker can launch an attack from afar by sending commands to each bot.
When the botnet goes after a victim's server or network, each bot sends requests to the target's IP address. This could cause the server or network to get too busy and stop normal traffic.
Because each bot is a real Internet device, it may be hard to tell the difference between attack traffic and normal traffic.
