General Information
Established in 1978, The London Bullion Market Association (now known simply as LBMA) is the International trade association representing the global Over The Counter (OTC) bullion market, and defines itself as the global authority on precious metals. It has a membership of approximately 150 firms globally, including traders, refiners, producers, miners, fabricators, as well as those providing storage and carrier services.
Membership Types
There are three types of membership: Full Membership, Market Making Membership, Affiliate Membership. Currently, LBMA has 74 full members, 60 affiliate members, market maker members in over 23 countries.
Full Membership-Full membership of LBMA is available to companies in the UK and abroad. All members must be operational in areas that are closely linked to the London bullion market.
Market Making Membership-Market Makers have the same rights as full members but must quote bid and offers prices to each other during the London business day, for agreed minimum quantities and tenors.
Affiliate Membership-Affiliate Membership of the LBMA is available to a range of international market participants, service providers, technology providers, exchanges, and intermediaries.
Vault Storage Services
There are six custodians offering vault storage services in the Loco London market. Three of these are clearing members of LBMA: HSBC, ICBC Standard Bank, and JP Morgan. These clearing members without their own dedicated vault operations use their accounts with one of the other custodians. The other security carriers are LBMA members: Brinks, Malca, Amit, and Loomis International (UK) Ltd.
LBMA‘s goods delivery Rules are considered the international regulatory standard for gold and silver bullion. The Standard LBMA gold bar weighs around 400 troy ounces, and must have a minimum purity of 995.0 parts/thousands fine gold (99.5%). They must be marked with a serial number, the refiners’ hallmark, its fineness and the year of production. Silver bullion bars are required to contain 999.0 parts/thousand silver (99.99%) and must show the same marks.
